A first-time guide to Jaisalmer: how many days, and where to go
Two days is enough for a first visit to Jaisalmer: one for the fort, Patwon Ki Haveli and Gadisar Lake, and one that ends in the desert near the Sam sand dunes. A third day adds Kuldhara, Bada Bagh or Desert National Park at an easier pace.
Day one: the fort and the old city
The fort is still lived in, and the havelis are carved down to the last balcony. Give the old-city lanes the morning, with Patwon Ki Haveli a short walk away.
Day two: the lake, then the dunes
Start at Gadisar Lake, then let the afternoon move west along Sam Road. The dunes are at their best as the light drops.
If you have a third day
Kuldhara, Bada Bagh or Desert National Park make for a longer outing. More ideas in Discover Jaisalmer and the travel guide.
When to go
Most travellers visit between October and March, when days are milder and desert evenings are cool. Choosing your tent by season.
